Uganda Reaffirms Support For Peace Efforts In Sudan
The Minister of Defence and Veteran Affairs, Hon Jacob Oboth-Oboth, held a meeting today with the Sudanese Ambassador to Uganda, H.E. Ahmad Ibrahim Ahmad, who paid a courtesy call at the Ministry headquarters in Mbuya.
The two discussed the evolving security situation in Sudan, including recent military operations to reclaim Khartoum from armed militia and ongoing efforts to establish a transitional civilian government.
Hon Oboth-Oboth reaffirmed Uganda’s dedication to regional stability and its role in peacebuilding. “Sudan may not be our immediate neighbour, but its stability affects the entire region. When they are not stable, we are not stable,” he said.
“We are committed to being exporters of peace, and President Museveni has shown leadership in giving time and support to troubled nations.”
Addressing the complexity of Sudan’s crisis, the Minister reflected on the delicate balance between diplomacy and military engagement. “When you stop talking, they think you’re weak. When you stop fighting, they think you’ve surrendered. There must be a balance,” he said, stressing that Uganda supports just causes embraced by the people themselves.
Ambassador Ahmad thanked Uganda for its continued support, noting that more than 90,000 Sudanese refugees are currently hosted in the country. “Uganda was the easiest and safest destination when the crisis escalated. We thank your government and people for standing with us,” he said.
He credited recent military gains in Khartoum to strong public backing for the Sudanese Armed Forces and outlined steps towards political transition, including plans to appoint a civilian prime minister and form a technocratic cabinet. “This move has been welcomed by the United Nations, the African Union, the Arab League, and IGAD,” he added.
Chief of Joint Staff, Major General Jack Bakasumba, highlighted the importance of regional collaboration, urging greater use of mechanisms like the Eastern Africa Standby Force, similar to ECOWAS in West Africa.
Also present at the meeting were the Permanent Secretary, Mrs Rosette Byengoma, and Sudan’s Military Attaché to Uganda, Brigadier General Faisal.
