Minister Lokeris Slams Cross-Region Criminals As Threat To Peace
The Minister for Karamoja Affairs, Hon Peter Lokeris, has strongly condemned the criminal activities of individuals he described as “peace spoilers” in the Nabilatuk and Napak districts.
These criminals, according to Hon Lokeris, not only disrupt local communities but also spread unrest across neighbouring regions such as Teso and Bugisu under the guise of grazing livestock.
Addressing a community security meeting in Nakayot village on November 16, Hon Lokeris called on the Ateker community to unite and end inter-clan violence. “As one Ateker family, I urge you to end infighting and revenge. Let us work together for peace,” he said.
He reaffirmed his commitment to ongoing community mobilization and to promoting government development initiatives.
Maj Gen Don Nabasa, commander of the 3 Infantry Division of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF), reassured the public that overall security in the region remains stable. However, he voiced concerns over criminal elements from Nabilatuk who are disturbing peace in neighbouring areas. Maj Gen Nabasa warned that joint security forces would intensify operations against those responsible if the community fails to address the issue.
Hon Remigio Achia, Member of Parliament (MP) for Pian County and Chairperson of the Karamoja Parliamentary Group (KPG), praised the security forces’ efforts but emphasised the need for “mental disarmament” and education to prevent future conflicts.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Francis Chemusto, Commandant of the Anti-Stock Theft Unit (ASTU), urged parents and leaders to discourage children from grazing livestock alone, which often leads to theft, and to prioritise their education to help create a crime-free future.
The meeting, attended by MPs, Brig Gen Wilberforce Sserunkuma Deputy Division Commander, RDCs, LC V chairpersons, security commanders, and local officials, was a significant step towards addressing regional security concerns.
