
Minister Oboth Urges EU To Deepen Security Cooperation With Uganda
The Minister of Defence and Veteran Affairs, Hon Jacob Marksons Oboth, has urged the European Union to bolster its collaboration with Uganda, particularly in the defence sector, to address escalating security threats within Uganda and the broader East African region.
During a meeting held at the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs Headquarters in Mbuya with Ms Annette Weber, the EU Special Representative for the Horn of Africa, Hon Oboth emphasised the critical need for enhanced cooperation to reinforce internal security and strengthen border protection across East Africa.
Ms Weber acknowledged Uganda’s pivotal role in promoting peace and stability, praising the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) for their ongoing contributions to peacekeeping missions in volatile areas including the Democratic Republic of Congo, Somalia, and South Sudan.
The meeting was also attended by senior defence officials including Lt Gen Sam Okiding, Deputy Chief of Defence Forces; Mrs Edith Buturo, Under Secretary for Finance and Administration; Lt Gen Charles Okidi, Commander of the UPDF Air Force; Maj Gen Jack Bakasumba, Chief of Joint Staff; Brig Gen Abdul Rugumayo, Deputy Chief of Defence Intelligence and Security; and Maj Bilal Katamba, Deputy Director of Defence Public Information, along with EU delegates.
